Ukrainian Athletes Win 20 Medals At 2012 Olympics In London

LONDON, England -- Ukrainian athletes have won six gold, five silver and nine bronze medals at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Great Britain, reads a statement posted at the Official London 2012 website.

Boxers Vasyl Lomachenko in Men's Light (60kg) and Oleksandr Usyk in Men's Heavy (91kg) won gold medals, Ukrainian rowers in Women's Quadruple Sculls, Yuri Cheban in Men's Canoe Single (C1) 200m, fencer Yana Shemyakina in Women's Individual Epee and weightlifter Oleksiy Torokhtiy in Men's 105kg.

Rower Inna Osypenko-Radomska won two silver medals in Women's Kayak Single (K1) Sprint 500m and in Women's Kayak Single Sprint (K1) 200m and Olena Kostevych won two bronze medals in Women's 25m Pistol Shooting and Women's 10m Air Pistol Shooting.

Boxers brought the Ukraine Olympic team most of others medals: two gold, one silver and two bronze ones; three medals in Athletics and three in Canoe Sprint and Rowing.

Kostevych won the first medal on July 29, and the latest wrestler Valerii Andriitsev on August 12.

With 20 medals Ukraine took 14th place in the unofficial team classification.

First is Team USA with 104 medals (48 gold), second Team China with 87 medals (38 gold) and Team GB third with 65 medals (29 gold).

At the same time, Ukrainian athletes' showings involved many judging rows, when, in the Ukrainian sports functionaries' opinion, the judges esteemed the sportsmen's showings unfairly.

Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has pronounced the same opinion, saying Ukraine was deprived of six medals because of unjust officiating.

The most resonant were the actions of arbitrators who awarded victory in the round of last 16 at the Olympic middleweight boxing bout between Ukrainian Yevhen Khytrov and Briton Anthony Ogogo to the latter although the Briton was knocked down twice and the score was tied.

All Ukraine's appeals were rejected.

The solemn ceremony of closing the Olympics was held late at night on August 12.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, 245 Ukrainian sportsmen participated in the London Olympics.

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games took place in London from July 27 to August 12.

At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing Ukraine won 27 medals, having taken 11th place in the unofficial team classification.
