MINSK, Belarus -- Ukraine does not plan to join the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia, Deputy Prime Minister Serhiy Tyhypko said in an interview published by a local magazine on Monday.

Any talks about Ukraine’s possible accession to the Customs Union are premature, said the vice premier who is in charge of economic matters.

“Firstly, the structure of the Customs Union is yet raw,” Mr. Tyhypko said.

“Secondly, Ukraine is a member of the World Trade Organization and these two institutions conflict with each other. It will be silly to withdraw from the WTO to join the Customs Union. It was difficult and it took time to join this organization; we paid a high price for the membership.”
