Ukraine Denies Entry To Senior Russian Lawmaker Zhirinovsky

KIEV, Ukraine -- Ukraine's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that the leader of a Russian ultranationalist party had been denied entry into the country.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky

Foreign Ministry spokesman Vasyl Filipchuk said Vladimir Zhirinovsky, a deputy speaker of the lower chamber of parliament and the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), was banned from traveling Ukraine over "debasing statements about Ukraine."

Ukraine's embassy in Moscow confirmed the ban Wednesday, but refused to comment.

"We are aware that Zhirinovsky has been denied entry into Ukraine," an embassy spokesman said.

The move is the latest spat between the two former Soviet republics. On Monday Ukraine banned Konstantin Zatulin, a prominent member of Russia's lower house of parliament from traveling to the Crimea, an autonomous region on the Black Sea where protests are being held against U.S.-led military exercises to be conducted in the largely Russian-speaking area.
