United Russia Deputy: President Viktor Yanukovych 'Must' Revoke Hero Status Of Stepan Bandera

MOSCOW, Russia -- The decree awarding Stepan Bandera the status of Hero of Ukraine must be revoked by President Viktor Yanukovych, Russian duma deputy Konstantin Zatulin told the Russian information RIA Novosti on April 3.

Russian Duma deputy Konstantin Zatulin, a leader of the pro-Kremlin United Russia Party, demands President Viktor Yanukovych rescind hero status for Stepan Bandera.

Bandera was a leader of Ukraine's nationalist movement, which included an insurgent army that for one period sided with the Nazis.

"Former president Viktor Yushchenko did not have the right to give Bandera the status of 'Hero of Ukraine.' Heroes of Ukraine can only be citizens of Ukraine and Stepan Bandera was not a citizen of Ukraine.

By signing the decree, Yushchenko knew beforehand that he would not be reelected.

He knew Ukrainians did support him during the first round of presidential election.

But Yushchenko deliberately provoked the situation, presenting Yanukovych with the dilemna to revoke or not revoke the decree," Zatulin said.
